The Athens NEWS was founded by Bruce Mitchell in the spring of 1977. Published every other week, the thin tabloid was originally sold on Athens downtown street corners for 25 cents. That fall the newspaper converted to free circulation.
The Athens NEWS quickly became known for its investigative journalism, colorful personalities, and pointed editorial stands. The paper grew in readership and stature, quickly becoming known for printing the news that no one else would. Publication frequency increased to weekly, then twice-weekly, by 1981.
